Community Action Planning Meeting Minutes

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Clark County Action Plan
Planning Meeting for Issue #2 – Drugs
Clark County Extension office – July 16, 2009

Each group reported on their progress. Several of the groups developed action plans for their goals. Some items to be addressed:
• How will funding be secured for action items in the Plan?
• There is a need for coordination and collaboration between groups working on the different issues to avoid duplication of efforts.
• There is a need for more communication in remote areas such as Trapp and Ford.
• There is a need to address diversity.

Goal #1 – Increase involvement in youth (Middle School and High School) extra-curricular activities
Linda presented an action plan that her group developed based on extra-curricular activity issues and opportunities. The group felt that this goal interfaced with CCCAP Issue #12. Linda will contact individuals working on that issue. Additional discussion on this goal will occur at the next meeting. (Handout distributed)

Goal #2 – Increase focus on treatment and diversion programs
Ron Kibbey presented an action plan for this goal. (Handout distributed)

Goal #3 – Increase awareness within the community
This group discussed the need for information/statistics on drug related situations. They would like to develop an awareness campaign. They suggest picking the top 5 issues and use local statistics from the police/hospital to communication to the community, but being careful not to overwhelm. They discussed the perceived naivety with the community regarding this issue and the need to attend churches, community organizations, etc; possibly developing a power point presentation that could be used at different venues. They identified a need to for education, especially regarding prescription drugs, maybe by talking to different preachers.

Goal #4 – Implement a Social Host Ordinance (both City and County governments)
The group has collected social host ordinances from other communities. They are considering if it would be best to have one combined or two separate. It is in the hands of county and city attorneys.

Goal #5 - Establish measurable data to develop baselines to track progress
Janna Smith talked with Paul Christy and he has safe schools data. There will be a KIPP survey this fall. The Board of Education will partner on this topic. The group plans to contact law enforcement, emergency room, health department to get data to track and to have numbers for reporting.

Next meeting September 17, 2009 at 3:00pm at City Hall.
